Fabiola Fajardo Ayala

Fabiola Fajardo Ayala, social leader, disappeared on Monday, August 20, 2018. That same day, her husband reported her missing to the authorities, but they failed to open an investigation arguing that the necessary time (72 hours) had not passed. A search party formed by community and family members was then organised and her body was found the next day, Tuesday, August 21 with one shot to the head. The circumstances of her murder remain unclear.

Fabiola was known in the community for her work in defence of environmental rights and and strong opposition to mining and fracking in the region. She was an active member of Movimiento Resistencia a la minería en el Carmen del Chucurí Santander, a resistance movement against mining. As the treasurer of the Junta de Acción Comunal of vereda La Colorada, Fabiola was an important part of various infrastructure and aid projects in the community.
