Freddy Angarita Martínez

Freddy Angarita Martínez was a community leader in a cluster of settlements in Cúcuta, Norte de Santander.

At 11.45am, on 16 May, 2020 armed gunmen who were travelling on a motorcycle arrived at his home in the community of La Isla and opened fire. Freddy was gravely wounded and taken to the nearby hospital where died later from his injuries.

He had previously received threats because of his human rights work.

Freddy was one of the organisers of a land occupation in an area known as torres Rodeo. He had spoken out about the threats he had received and named 4 individuals.

Days before the killing a man who identified himself ad DE Luis had gone to the occupation and threatened Freddy directly.
