Héctor Fabio Almairo

Héctor Fabio Almairo, social leader and environmental defender, was murdered by several men on motorbikes in the municipality of La Macarena, in the Colombian department of Meta.

Almairo was the president of the Community Action Committee of Getsemani and was a member of the National Coordination of Coca and Poppy Growers (Coccam for its Spanish acronym). Authorities stated that Almairo, who was known for his work in restitution of illegal crops, had not previously received threats.

The Institute for Peace and Development Studies (Indepaz) noted that Almairo’s death is one more murder to be added to the 219 murders of social leaders that have taken place in 2018 in Colombia.
