Humberto Morales Santiz

On 28th February, human rights defender Humberto Morales Santiz was brutally killed by a group of assailants while he was sent by his parents to collect wood in the mountain in Carrizal district, Chiapas.

Humberto Morales Santiz a 13 years old young human rights was a secondary school student, full of hope and ambition to continue his studies. Humberto was targeted because he and his family were active campaigners for the land rights of the community. Around 2pm, on 28th February 2017, the young boy was sent by his parents to collect wood in the mountain. While looking for wood, Humberto was approached by a group of armed persons who shot him on the head. When he did not return after several hours his family became concerned and organised a search, which led to the discovery of his body.

According to Frente Nacional de Lucha por el Socialismo (FNLS)- the National Front of struggle for Socialism, the murder of the young Humberto was a big loss to the young generation in the community.
