Jorge Humberto Alpala

Jorge Humberto Alpala was a community leader of the indigenous Los Pastos community in Cumbal, Nariño. He had been mayor of Cumbal between 2012 and 2015.

On 18 February 2020 Jorge Humberto was out having dinner with friends when a group of armed men arrived and forced him at gunpoint to get up from the table and come with them.

They took him into the mountains and 7 days later his semi-naked body was found dumped in a stream. He had been shot multiple times and the body showed evident signs of torture.

At the time of his death Jorge Humberto was under investigation for possible corruption linked to the granting of contracts during his time in office. He was under house arrest under the supervision of the Cabildo (Chief) of the indigenous community.
