Nestor Dagatan Sacote

Nestor Sacote, a 29-year-old farmer and human rights defender, was shot and killed by suspected military actors in the Davao Oriental, The Philippines on the 10th of June 2018. Sacote was followed and surrounded by while driving his motorbike home. The assailants immediately fled on motorbike after shooting Scaote several times.

Sacote’s death comes following his vocal opposition to the increased militarization of communities within the region.  The indigenous community member and member of local farmers alliance group (Alyansa sa mga Mag-uuma sa Sidlakang Davao otherwise known as ALMASID) was a staunch and active voice for the Lumad and peasant working and living conditions.

Sacote’s death comes within a context of violent killings on similar human rights defenders within the Philippines, especially indigenous peasant farmer communities under the Duterte Administration.
