Oaxaca de Juárez.- Telésforo Santiago Enríquez, an indigenous teacher and community radio activist, was ambushed and shot dead on Thursday 02 May in the municipality of San Agustín Loxicha, in the Sierra Sur region of Oaxaca.

According to preliminary reports from the local authorities, the teacher who ran a community radio station called “Stereo Cafetal”, on FM frequency 98.7, was ambushed in the neighborhood of Tres Cruces. Unknown persons intercepted him when he was driving to the radio station and They shot him with firearms, after which they fled.

Santiago Enríquez was a promoter and defender of indigenous languages ​​and used his programme to articulate trenchant criticisms of the local state bodies. He had also stood as a candidate for municipal president on several occasions.

The State Agency of Investigations and the Public Prosecutor’s Office have initiated an investigation to find the perpetrators.
