Erasio Vieda, was an indigenous leader of the Tolupán Tribe of the community of San Francisco, of the Brisas de Locomapa Village, Yoro.

A fervent opponent of mining companies he was an active militant in the fight against the destruction of the forests at the hands of businessmen and local politicians who for years have benefited from nature’s assets, using all kinds of criminal methods against the Tolupán people and the main indigenous leaders of this sector

Tolupan communities oppose deforestation and the installation of mining companies. Erasio was killed at five in the morning of Thursday 18 June 2015, when the killer opened fire with a shot gun.

There is strong evidence suggesting that the hired assassins, who are very close to certain local landowners and businessmen,  were also  involved in the 2013 killing of María Enriqueta Matute, Ricardo Soto and Armando Fúnez, who were all murdered for defending the forest.

All these crimes remain unpunished. As a result of these murders, the Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice (MADJ) requested the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (CIDH) to require the State of Honduras to protect life by providing precautionary measures.
