Willar Alexander Oimé Alarcón

Willar Alexander Oime Alarcon, 31 years old, was a recognized indigenous leader and communicator, active in the exercise of community representation and Principal Governor of the Rio Blanco Sotara Regiment, Yanakona Village in the municipality of Sotará, Cauca.

According to the indigenous authorities of the Yanakona People, the attack of Willar Alexander Oime Alarcón occurred at 4:16 pm on March 2, 2016 in the Barrio el Empedrado, Historic Center of the City of Popayán.

Those who accompanied him and witnessed the incident, said they were approached by two people on a motorcycle, who shot Willar four times. The Yanakona leader died at 7:20 pm at the University Hospital San José de Popayán.

Willar was devoted to the defense of the land and the ecosystem, particularly on the issues of access to water and the impact of mining in his community.
