Claudio Chávez was a member of a farmers’ organization in San José del Palmar, in Choco municipality.

He was killed on the 8th of April 2018 while participating in a meeting convened by ELN in the La Italia village in Choco.

The guerrilla seized Chávez (together with one other activist) and brought him to the scene of the crime.

According to Mauricio Moreno, commanding Officer of the Joint Forces Command, Titán said that this type of crime is not common in the region, and described  the murder as an isolated event.

However, the Office of the Ombudsman highlighted that at least 5 social leaders were killed in 2018 in the Choco region alone.
