Hernán Darío Chavarría Areiza

Hernán Darío Chavarría Areiza, social leader, was found dead on the side of the road by a group of farmers on Saturday, August 4, 2018 in a village where he was visiting some relatives. The police classified his death as an accident, explaining that he had fallen down while being drunk, hit his head and died. However, local HRDs have images and footage that they claim show injuries that could not have been caused by a fall.

Hernán was a founding partner of Asociación de Comités Barequeros del Norte de Antioquia (Asocbare-NA) and had dedicated himself to artisanal mining. He was recognized by the community as a strong defender of rights.
