Manuel Gregorio González Segura

Manuel Gregorio González Segura disappeared on Wednesday, July 26, 2019 when he left his farm riding a horse to do some shopping. When his horse was found with the shopping bags, community members were alerted. His body was found the morning of Thursday, July 27, 2019 at around 5:30AM by some farmers on their way to work. His body showed signs of torture and he had been shot several times; his hands were still tied.

Manuel was a defender of land and peasant rights. He was an active member of Asociación de Campesinos del Sur de Córdoba (Ascsucor), which is part of the national organization Asociación Nacional de Zonas de Reserva Campesina (Anzorc) and also, of the political movement Marcha Patriótica. He was also part of the national organization Coordinadora Nacional de Cultivadores de Coca, Amapola y Marihuana (COCCAM), an organization that has had more than thirty of its members killed since the Peace Agreement was signed in 2016. Manuel was a beneficiary of the government’s illegal-crop substitution programme, Plan Nacional Integral de Sustitución de Cultivos de Uso Ilícito (PNIS).

Corregimiento El Palmar, the territory where Manuel lived and was killed, is included in the Early Alert System because of the presence of drug trafficking armed groups that seek to control the area. This system was created by the human rights advocacy institution Defensoría del Pueblo to alert authorities of the risks the civilian population and HRDs face in some areas.
