On 09 October, 2018, Óscar Aníbal España Ordoñez, 30 year old, was murdered when he was working on his farm, when unknown men opened fire. This killing has caused a lot of anger in the local community.
Óscar was a prominent leader and vice president of ” Junta de Acción Comunal de la Vereda Recreo Alto” in the Municipality of Cartagena del chairá, Caquetá.
Octavio Collazos, one of the human rights defenders working in the area, issued a statement calling for the authorities to take action:
“We are aware that two people were murdered in the village of Recreo Alto, in Cartagena del Chairá, including the Vice President of Junta de Acción Comunal. What we have to say as human rights defenders is that the murders of community and social leaders is continuing, and that is the reason why we are calling the authorities to prorect social and communal activity and stop the killing in many regions of Caquetá and Colombia”.
At the time, the general secretary of the Caquetá Government, Édgar Álvarez, said the authorities were carrying out an investigation to solve the murders.
