The Killing & Investigation

On the night of March 18, social leader Joaquín Emilio Jaramillo López, was approached by armed men who came to his home located in the Piedras Blancas district of San Miguel, in this municipality of eastern Antioquia, and shot him several times.

The victim was shot by two men on a motorcycle. One of the attackers, fired his gun at Mr. Jaramillo López.  The community tried to move him to a care centre, but he died almost immediately.

“So far we have no serious indications of what may have happened; we are finding out from the community and the relatives what kind of threats this person had in order to try to prosecute the investigation,” explained Major Pedro Isaza, commander of the Marinilla District.

Caracol Radio has learned that this murder is not related to their community activity and could be a dispute over illegal micro-trafficking businesses, which should be confirmed in the investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.

It seems that a group of men who worked for the former paramilitary chief Ramón Isaza are committing crimes in the area, the same men who are now committing crimes on their own in Doradal, Magdalena Medio, but who intend to extend their area of influence to the municipality of Sonsón.

The investigators are analyzing whether these people are related to the murder of Mr. Jaramillo López.
