Cristián Adrián Angulo, 24, was a community leader and singer, known for his work as an organiser of cultural events, and his support for social causes in the Llano Verde neighbourhood of Cali. He also organised programmes for young people to keep them away from violence and to prevent them getting involved in criminal gangs<
According to his family, on the afternoon of 8 March 2020 Cristián left home to go to the local police station to pick up his identity document. From that moment his family had no further news of him.
On 11 March, Cristián’s lifeless body was found in a gully on the road to the Navarro Township. He had been killed with a single shot to the head.
There are many inconsistencies in the police explanation of his death.
According to the police version, a young man (Cristian), °allegedly broke into a farm, with his face covered and wielding a gun. In the confrontation that followed he was shot using his own gun. The perpetrator has been charged with murder.
However, there is general disbelief in the community in this version of events, especially given Cristian’s work against violence.
Cristián had previously had problems with the police because he had complained about the way they treated young people. Additionally he had recently been stopped by police and found in possession of a small quantity of marijuana.
He had been held overnight and the police had held onto his identity card. He was going to the police station to collect the card when he disappeared.
In addition the place where the body was found is very far away from where Cristián lived and he had no means of transport.
His family hold the police accountable and are demanding a full investigation into Cristián’s death.
