Djalma Santos da Conceição, 54, known as Djalma Batata, was a journalist who worked at the radio station “RCA FM” and was the presenter of the programme “Acorda Cidade!”, located in the Municipality of Conceição da Feira, in Bahia state.

On 23 May 2015, Djalma was kidnapped by hooded men,  at approximately 23h30, when he was watching some musicians play samba in his own pub. His lifeless body was found the next day, on the edge of a road showing signs of torture. he had also been shot at least 15 (fifteen) times.

The journalist was well known in his home town, because of his public opinions about corruption, politicians, drug dealers and crime in general. According to the news agency “Epoca” a friend of the human rights leader, said that he was totally committed to his job. On one occasion Djalma  managed to negotiate his own deal with drug dealers to recover a teenager`s dead body, so he could have a decent burial.

Sources affirm that Djalma had received threats, because of his public struggle against crime in his city.

This was the second murder of a  journalist in less than ten days in Brazil.  On 18 May 2015, journalist Evany Jose Metzker was murdered in the north-east of Minas Gerais state.
