Fran was occupying a plot in the invaded area of Fazenda Santa Lúcia, the same place where, in May 2017, 10 rural workers were murdered in the “Pau D’Arco slaughter.
The civilian police confirmed on Tuesday (7) the death Joacir Fran Alves da Mota, 38, in Pau D’Arco, southeast of Pará. The victim was the occupant of a plot in the invaded area of Fazenda Santa Lúcia. He was shot on the night of Sunday 06 March. So far, no one has been arrested.
The Department of Agrarian Conflicts of Marabá (DECA / Marabá) sent a team along with experts from the Technological Skills Center Renato Chaves to perform the victim’s removal and autopsy in addition to collecting information from the crime scene.
According to DECA de Marabá, the first information indicates that the crime was due to land conflict, the main cause being an internal dispute between occupants of the rural property.
CONFLICTS IN THE AREA
The Santa Lucia farm has been the target of land disputes since 2010, when it was abandoned and was occupied by a group of rural workers who wanted to build an agrarian reform settlement there. The death of Joacir Mota happened in the same farm where, in May of 2017, 10 rural workers were shot dead in a police operation, in a case that became known as “the Pau D’Arco massacre”.
