Jorge Iván Ramos had previously commanded the 37th unit of the FARC but was one of the signatories of the Peace Agreement and was now in charge of the Comprehensive National Programme for the Substitution of Illicit Crops (PNIS).
Jorge Iván was a member of the national leadership of the FARC Party and although his work was at the national level, he was also leading several projects related to the implementation of the final Peace Agreement in Bolívar, where he lived.
On the afternoon of Saturday, 28 August, 2020, Jorge Iván, known in the war as Mario Morales, was assassinated. He was traveling with the head of his security unit near the village of Palmachica in the municipality of Santa Rosa when armed men intercepted them and asked him to identify himself. They then separated him from the other person and shot him dead. The members of the FARC Party believe that the killing was carried out by dissident members of the ELN and have published an open letter to that group in which they state: “It is hard for us to believe that an organisation founded on revolutionary principles and that today wants the country to support its desire for dialogue and for the national government to implement the peace talks agenda, is acting against men and women who are children of the people, while we for our part reach out to all the corners of Colombia to fulfill our commitment and demand that the state fully implement the Final Agreement. ”
At least 176 ex-combatants have filed complaints to the Attorney General’s Office because of threats and intimidation they have received. However, given the upsurge in violence against the signatories of the agreement, the FARC Party decided to submit its complaint to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in May 2020. Led by Rodrigo Londoño or Timocheko , they went to the international organisation to request protective measures and thus force the Colombian Government to guarantee their protection and security.
