Jimmy Saypan was well known as an active peasant leader and general secretary of the Compostela Farmers Association. For many years, Saypan fought against illegal mining exploitation by multinational companies in their territory.

Saypan was shot by unnamed men allegedly from the 66th battalion Philippines Army and he died the following day from his wounds.

Saypan undertook several actions in order to stop logging of the 66th Infantry Battalion-Philippine Army in communities in Compostela.  Saypan also engaged dialogue with the 66th (IBPA) in order to find solution for the well-being of the communities of Compostela Valley.
