Gregorio Hernández, a gay man and activist for the rights of LGBT people in the state of Tamaulipas, was murdered in his own home, located in the city of Matamoros, this Saturday, November 25. His body was found with signs of torture and violence, so the investigations do not rule out that it was a hate crime.

The police authorities arrived at Manuel Rodríguez Brayda Street, in the Doctores neighborhood of the municipality of Matamoros, after neighbors reported that there was a body without life in said home.

According to the investigations, Hernández was attacked on three occasions with a sharp object, the same with which he was found at the scene of the crime. The reports indicate that before being killed, the man was in the company of a group of friends.

The Attorney General of the State of Tamaulipas is already investigating the incident, although at the moment there are no suspects of the crime.

The acquaintances, friends and local LGBT activists insist that it was a hate crime, since Hernández was a well-known activist in favor of the rights of LGBT people, a cause that he championed iat every opportunity.

Gregorio who was 50-years-old was an active member of the Institutional Revolution Party, where for several years he fought so that there was no discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people twho wanted to join the party, as well as openly gay people who wished to become candidates for the party.

Gerardo de la Cruz Carrillo, president of the Municipal Steering Committee of the PRI in Matamoros, condemned the crime of which Gregorio Hernández was the victim. Gregorio was also known for his student leadership in the Tec de Matamoros. According to De la Cruz, Hernández was a person who was very active in the party and who “always watched over the rights of the gay and lesbian community and acted as a spokesperson for this group.
