About

Erick Yamid Torres Buitrago was a radio broadcaster from Saravena (Arauca)

The Killing

Erick Yamid Torres Buitrago was shot dead in March 2019. Two people were captured in Arauca, the Prosecutor’s Office said through a statement, that the interception of messages shared by Gonzalez and Pinzon through whatsapp made it possible to establish that they “ordered the murder of Erick Yamid Torres Buitrago,” a regional radio station broadcaster.

Background & Investigation

Colombian authorities have captured social leader Yolanda González García in the department of Arauca, on the border with Venezuela, for her alleged ties to FARC dissidents, the Attorney General’s Office announced Thursday.

Along with González, who was the departmental secretary of the Independent Social Alliance Party (ASI), Emilio Pinzón Mogollón was captured in the municipality of Saravena, the investigator added in a statement.

The technical evidence obtained indicates that these people played an active role in the criminal organization and, through calls and messages, gave instructions on various illegal activities in Arauca and other areas of the east of the country,” the Attorney General’s Office said.

The prosecutor explained that Gonzalez ‘had fixed money quotas for merchants to allow them to take their products out of the region and asked them to give up their land to support the organization’.

The resources from the extortion were used by the dissidents to finance attacks against the civilian population, the oil and electricity infrastructure, as well as against the army and police.

During the investigations, it was discovered that in an exchange of messages by WhatsApp – recovered by the Prosecutor’s Office – it was ‘found that those captured ordered the murder of Erick Yamid Torres Buitrago, a radio broadcaster from Saravena (Arauca),’who in March 2019, days after the communication, was murdered by the residual group Frente 10’.
