Jhonny Walter Castro was a well respected community leader in Linares, Nariño who had worked for many years for the victims of the armed conflict, especially those living in poverty. He was a member of the Mesa de Participación Efectiva de las Víctimas por el enfoque de discapacidad (Committee for Active Participation By Victims of Violence, Especially Those with Disability).
On 19 November, 2020, Jhonny was at home in San Francisco de Linares when a gunman entered the house and shot him dead.
According to a spokesperson for the Mesa de Victimas, “Jhonny was a hard working man who gave everything to help the community, especially the victims of the ongoing violence.” He had previously reported receiving threats but had never been offered any protection by the authorities.
