On the afternoon of 29 October 2018, the ex-ejidal commissariat of the San Vicente community and member of the Popular Assembly of the People of Guerrero (APPG for its Spanish acronym), José Nava Lorenzo was driving with his wife and son when they were ambushed in the area known as Los Amates. José died in the attack.
José was a state policeman and was one of the 176 policemen who were dismissed in May 2017 by the Secretary of Public Security. In the days prior to his death, José together with some of his colleagues had demanded their reinstatement.
Also, José opposed the excessive felling of wood in mountains of Guerrero and was a socially active person, demonstrating his support for the 500 + families who were affected by hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid in 2013 and demanding that they be relocated.
He also supported the staff of Prospera who were fired in 2016 and on several occasions he participated in protests for the Ayotzinapa 43 and in support of miners from Taxco.
