Oliverio Conejo was an ancestral authority of the indigenous Totoroez people in Totoró, Cauca. He was also in charge of the community health programme in the area and was responsible for implementing plans to protect the community from COVID.
On 11 September, 2020, Oliverio was driving with his daughter, Emily Conejo Angucho, on the road between the municipalities of Inzá and Totoró, when he was intercepted by two men on a motor bike who opened fire killing both Oliverio and Emily instantly. Oliverio had been on his way to attend a religious ceremony.
There is a high level of violence in Cauca due to an ongoing battle between dissident elements of the FARC and the ELN for control of the drug traffic in the area.
