Orlando Negrete, affectionately known as Coco, was murdered at a local football match, which he was enjoying with his family and friends. He was the former president of the community assembly of Camu, in the highlands of the department of Córdoba.
The commander of the Córdoba Police Force, Coronel Marcelo Russi, offered the following description of the events. “We regret to inform the public of the violent death of Mr. Orlando Nicolás Negrete, forty years of age, who worked in the agricultural trade and had been president of the community assembly of Camu. He was enjoying a football match when the assailants arrived and opened fire. He was hit with several bullets, which caused his death at the place of the shooting,”
Within a week of Orlando’s death, another three social leaders were assassinated. Julio Cesar Montalvo, also from the department of Córdoba, was a leader from the Zenú reservation in Alto San Jorge. Carlos Jimmy Prado Gallardo, was the national delegate to the government programme for consulting communities prior to development projects, in which he represented the community of Black, Afro-Colombian, Raizal and Palenquero communities. Delmayro Reyes was a teacher and social leader in the department of Valle del Cauca.
