García Llano was a social leader in Pereira, a coffee-growing region in western Colombia and the capital city of the department of Risaralda. He ran a farmer’s cooperative called Coagro-Pereira which was affiliated to ANUC, a peasant organization created in 1967 to coordinate Colombian farmers, provide them with capacity building and defend their economic, political and social rights when representing them before the government.
García Llano was killed, just hours after attending the burial of another ANUC leader in the neighbouring town of La Virgina.
This farmer was also the son of Jose Alirio Garcia Serna, National Vicepresident of ANUC and president of this organisation in Risaralda.
