Fifty-six year old Yordán Educardo Alemeza Papamija was a leader in the peasant community of vereda Cabaña in Puerto Asís, Putumayo. He was also a member of the Junta de Acción Comunal (Community Action Board) – JAC.
On 03 July, 2020 Yordàn was shot dead by members of the Fuerza Publica during an operation by the military as part their campaign for the forced eradication of coca production in the area.
More than four hundred members of the community were protesting against this army action and were calling on the military to respect the terms of the Peace Agreement which allow for a voluntary programme of crop substitution.
The members of the community were taking part in a peaceful protest and negotiations between the peasants and the military were under way to avoid confrontation when members of the National Police Drug Unit opened fire on the protesters. Yordàn was killed immediately and three other protesters were injured.
Afterwards the police tried to cover up the killing by dressing Yordàn in military fatigues, which he had not been wearing earlier, and pretending that he had been a member of an armed opposition group.
