Bayron Revelo Insuasty was a primary school teacher and a member of the Executive Committee of the Sindicato del Magisterio de Nariño (Simana) (Teachers Union of Nariño°). He was also a member of the political movement “Colombia Humana”

On 12 November 2020, he had gone to Tumaco with a colleague on union business. On 13 November both men were kidnapped and two days later his colleague was released unharmed.

On 22 November Bayron Revelo Insuasty was found dead. He had been shot multiple times.

At the same time another teacher, Douglas Cortés, was shot dead in Risaralda.

The Union has called on the government to end its campaign of stigmatisation of teachers because of their participation in trade union activities.

The level of violence against community leaders has been steadily increasing in 2020 with 95 killed in the first quarter of the year.
