The Killing & Investigation

Bernardo de Jesús Chancí, was assassinated on 26th November 2019 in the municipality in northern Antioquia. Antioquia Police Commander, Colonel Giovanny Buitrago, confirmed that according to the information received by the authorities, those responsible for the murder of Chancí was be three men, who opened fire on the social leader without saying a word when he was in the jurisdiction of the Santa Lucía district of Ituango.

Buitrago assured that the social leader had no threats against him and that the case is already under investigation:

“At this time, a committee of the Judicial Police of the elite corps have moved to coordinate the investigation with the Nation’s Attorney General. They are making the inquiries, we regret and reject the death of any citizen in the department, in this special case of a community leader in Ituango. ”

Several early warnings have indicated the risk that leaders are taking from the dispute of criminal groups such as the Gulf Clan, Caparrapos, ELN and Dissidencias.

Crop restitution has been one of the main reasons for community and peasant leaders being killed. Bernardo is the fourth leader killed in Ituango this year.
