Carlos Eduardo Melo Ramírez

Social leader Carlos Eduardo Melo Ramírez was killed on the 5th of February 2019 in the city of Bogota.

Ramirez was in the vicinity of his home when suddenly he was approached by a man and stabbed twice.  The stabbing has been recorded on a local surveillance camera. Ramirez’s neighbours tried to help him, but the man died on the spot.

Carlos Eduardo Melo Ramírez (50) was known in his community for the community work he carried out in the Antonio José de Sucre district in Usme, Bogotá. Because of that, the authorities are investigating the case, trying to establish the reasons for this crime. Ramirez was not the first activist killed in Usme. In 2017 there were at least two more cases where activists got killed, supposedly for being opposed to  micro-trafficking activity in the region.
