Elizabeth Betancur García

Elizabeth Betancur was a member of the Red Nacional de Mujeres Comunales de Colombia,(National Network of Womens’ Groups of Colombia) and was coordinator of Capacitación Comunal del Capítulo Yolombó (Community Training Programme of the Yolombó Chapter).

On 11 December, 2020, Elizabeth was in the El Atajo area of vereda Las Margaritas, which is about 40 minutes from the centre of the municipality of Yolombó, when an unknown gunman shot her dead.

According to Pilar Rueda of the Unidad de Investigación y Acusación de la Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz (Investigations and Prosecutions Unit of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace) “In our country, since the signing of the Peace Agreement, violence against women has persisted and has increased in some forms. Since the signing of the Peace Agreement, 131 women have been killed for their social leadership and for the defense of Human Rights.”
