Fredy Guetio Zambrano

Fifty-six year old Fredy Güetio Zambrano was an indigenous leader and human rights defender in Suárez, Cauca. He had previously been governor of the Nasa Cerro Tijeras, indigenous reserve and had also been president of the Junta de Acción Comunal (Community Action Board) in the community of Agua Clara.

On 12 October, 2020 Fredy and his wife, Reina Mera, were leaving their workplace to go home, when unknown gunmen opened fire on them, killing both.

The killing of Fredy and Reina brought to 76 the number of indigenous leaders killed in Cauca in the first 9 months of 2020. The victims had all been targeted because of their prominent leadership role in the community.
