Gabriel Humberto Chacón García, environmentalist, was shot dead on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 by two men riding a motorcycle. Another environmentalist who was with him at the time, Mateo Ramírez Hernández, was also shot dead.
Both of them were members of Fundación para el Ecodesarrollo y la Conservación (Fundaeco), an NGO dedicated to the creation, management, protection and conservation of Protected Areas in Guatemala. It seeks to encourage and build sustainable processes of territorial management that simultaneously maximize the objectives of nature conservation, well-being and the empowerment of local communities.
Both Gabriel and Mateo worked as forest rangers in the Reserva Hídrica Sierra Caral, a water reserve in Morales, Izabal.
