Hernando Herrera Arango

Hernando Herrera Arango was a farmer and a community leader in the village of   El Brasil de Sonsón, in the state of Antioquia.

On 19 January 2020, a gunman drove up to his home and shot him multiple times killing him instantly. Hernando was standing as a candidate in the elections to the Municipal Council of Sonsón.

The killer, identified as John Jairo Aguirre Alzate, alias Tornillo”, then fled the scene and escaped to a wooded qrea where he opened fire on the police. In the resulting shoot out he was injured and died later in hospital.

When the police searched his home they found two high caliber weapons and a large supply of ammunition.

This was the second violent killing in Sonsón, in a matter of days. On 18 January,  Luis Enrique Hernández  was stabbed to death. The circumstances of this killing have yet to be explained.
