Jaime Eduardo Monge Hamman

Jaime Eduardo Monge Hamman was an environmental rights defender, a founder of ASOCAMPESINA and a member of Fundación Pachamama in Santiago de Cali, Valle del Cauca.

He was also part of the group of environmentalists working to protect the Parque Nacional Natural Farallones (the Farallones National Natural Park) in Cali, which is threatened by illegal mining.

On 18 August, 2020, he was at home in the rural village of Villacarmelo, in the south of Cauca, when armed men burst in and shot him dead.

In May 2020, another environmentalist, Jorge Enrique Oramas, was also shot dead in similar circumstances in Villacarmelo. Jorge was in charge of another environmental project called “Biocanto del Millenio” and like Jaime Eduardo he was opposed to illegal mining.
