Meztli Omixochitl Sarabia

Meztli Omixochitl Sarabia was member of Union Popular de los Vendedores Ambulantes (UPVA) in the region of Puebla in Mexico. The aim of this organisation is to defend workers’  rights in general and the rights of street merchants in particular. Since its foundation, the members of UPVA have suffered harassment, threats and detention by the local authorities.

During her career as a human rights defender, Omixochitl Sarabia has constantly denounced  the illegal treatment of the street merchants who have suffered the repression of  the state police force. Despite all the killings by the authorities in order to stop Omixochitl Sarabia from expressing her opinion, she has continued to defend the rights of the street merchants.

Though her determination, and tireless work have cost her life, it is here an opportunity to pay tribute to a courageous woman who has worked for a noble and peaceful cause.
