Modesto Verales Sebastían was promoter of the Indigenous and Popular Council of Guerrero – Emiliano Zapata (Cipog-EZ), a member of the National Indigenous Congress (CNI).
Verales and Indigenous Councilor José Lucio Bartolo, were killed when heading back to their community after a meeting where they were planning mobilizations to press for political and social demands before the state and federal authorities.
Both leaders had participated in a recent national protest on April 10.
According to a CNI statement, both José Bartolo and Modesto Verales Sebastián had been organizing a communal police corp for years “to face the violence, extortion and the imposition of poppy sowing by two criminal groups in the region (Los Ardillos y Los Rojos).” CNI denounces that these two groups allegedly control the municipal presidencies in the region and have the complicity of the Army as well as the state and municipal police corps.
According to the CNI, both leaders “were intercepted by armed groups that persecuted them and executed them in the city of Chilapa.” The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the bodies were located in an abandoned vehicle without license plates.
The Attorney General’s Office of Guerrero is investigating the double homicide.
