Social leader Nicomedes Payán Segura (56) was killed on the 29 of January 2018, in the Costa Pacífica del Cauca, a rural region of the López de Micay municipality. A municipal official Hermes Caicedo stated that the victim was attacked at his house around 7.30PM by an unknown person. He was shot dead with a shotgun.

His body was transported to the local hospital López de Micay for a post mortem.

Nicomedes Payán Segura was a well-known leader in the Taparal region, where he was from himself.

According to the local authorities, there had been no reports of threats or intimidations.

Nicomedes was a member of the Consejo Communitario de Comunidades Negras in Mamuncia.
