Ramon Alcides Garcia Zapata of Antioquia, Colombia was the leader of a programme for the voluntary substitution of illicit crops and a member of Barequeros of Chiri Alto, associated with the Patriotic March.

On October 27 2017, Garcia Zapata was returning home after receiving the monthly payment for the illicit crop substitution process when an unknown assailant(s) shot him to death. The motive for his murder  has not been confirmed.

Since Garcia’s murder the community has been on edge about participating in the organisation to replace the illicit crops. They do not feel that they have the appropriate security measures to continue. The organisations have asked the government to take the necessary actions to punish those responsible for the crime and demand that their community rights be respected.
