Tomás Barreto Moreno

Tomás Barreto Moreno, a member of the Consejo Comunitario de Comunidades Afro in San José de Uré, Córdoba, was killed on the 11/03/2018, hours before the local elections.

The killing took place in the El Can village. Tómas lived in the foothills of the Nudo De Paramillo, a spot where various narco- trafficking routes converge.

Officials of the Córdoba Police Department stated that the victim was a nephew of one of the members of the San José de Uré Council and as soon as they heard about the attack, around 9 pm, various police units hurried to the crime scene.

According to the initial information, two men on one motorbike came to Tómas’s house and fired their guns several times.

Tómas was a fourth civic leader killed in the San José de Uré this year, and a ninth one in the whole of Córdoba.

La Unidad Para las Víctimas stated that just last year over 150 families in the  San José de Uré region decided to move away as a direct consequence of the violence.
