Uberney Muñoz Daza

Uberney Muñoz was a community and peasant leader in Argelia, Cauca. He was a member of the Asociación Campesina de Trabajadores de Argelia (Association of Farm Workers of Argelia), ASCAMTA and was well known for his work in support of many community development projects.

He had been active in the recent campaign to elect the current Mayor and had also been involved in setting up an emergency committee for the prevention of COVID.

On 13 August, 2020, Uberney was driving in his truck on the road between Argelia and Balboa when he was intercepted by a group of armed men who shot him dead. Another member of ASCAMT, Alberto Ruiz, who was travelling with him, was also killed.

There is an going battle between several paramilitary groups for the control of territory which has resulted in a significant number of killings.

It is believed that Uberney was murdered by the Carlos Patiño Unit of Farc.
