Waldomiro Costa Pereira

Waldomiro Costa Pereira, an important activist within the Landless Workers Movement (MST) and a member of the Workers Party (PT), was murdered In the early hours of March 20, 2017, in the Paraupebas city hospital where he had been recovering from a previous assassination attempt.

Waldomiro was an activist with the Landless Workers Movement (MST) since 1996 and survived the April 17, 1996, Eldorado dos Carajás massacre, when 19 landless workers where killed by the State Military Police. In more recent years, he had joined the Workers Party (PT) and was working as an advisor for the City Office.

On Saturday, 18th of March, 2017, he was the target of an assassination attempt when he was shot inside his own house in the rural area of Eldorado dos Carajás. Waldomiro was severely hurt but survived the attack and was taken to the hospital in Paraupebas, where he was attacked for the second time 2 days later. 5 armed men wearing masks burst into the hospital, subdued the security guards and shot Waldomiro dead.

The police is investigating the case and arrested 2 suspects, the city guard Lionício de Jesus Souza and Francisco Ubiratan Silva. Besides them, a military police sergeant is also being investigated.
