Anselmo Villareal

Telmo Villareal, as he was known in the neighborhood, was a peasant from Saba, in northeastern Honduras. According to local sources, Villareal (62) was hit by a bullet when he was riding his bicycle near a demonstration against the national election results, during a military crack down.

He went out to look for some bananas, explained his son, and did not return. The images of his last moments made headlines, as they were captured on video by one of the protesters.

Villareal became the first fatal victim of the repression after the national strike between January 20 and 27, 2018, but according to information from the Committee of Relatives of Disappeared Detainees in Honduras (COFADEH), Telmo Villareal was the 35th murder since the day of the elections of November 26, 2017.
