On the 23 of November 2018, a violent shooting ended the life of 22year old Rommel Romon, member of the Unified Farmers organization of Agusan del Sur (Nagkahiusang Mag-uuma sa Agusan del Sur, otherwise known as Namasur,).
Shot three times, in the leg, chest, and head respectively, Romon died instantly in the shooting that left a fellow indigenous Lumad leader in a critical condition.
While one of Rommel’s shooters has been identified, the other gunmen remain unknown.
Human rights groups state that Romon was working to oppose the expansion of the palm oil plantations and agribusiness that have left the already marginalized Filipino peasantry with deteriorating working and living conditions.
