Janeth González López

Janeth González López was treasurer of the town of Constancia el Rosario in Oaxaca and also an activist with the Movement for Triqui Unification and Struggle (MULT.) She was 34 years old and had a 9-year-old son. The child was with Janeth when she was murdered on the afternoon of March 26, 2018 in front of the house in which they lived. Two unknown assailants fired at Janeth while she was arriving home at the end of the day.

In a press release, the MULT declared “Once again, murderous bullets leave our family in mourning; we are overwhelmed by pain in the face of so much impunity, indolence and indifference. [Janeth] was a professional who always dedicated herself to her work and to her people, as well as to our organisation.”

These events take place within a context of extreme violence faced by members of popular organisations, human rights defenders and the Mexican people in general, pointed out the Network for the Defence of Human Rights in its own press release. The violence entails crimes against humanity such as extrajudicial executions, torture, enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests.
