Luis Tarazona Salamanca

In the evening of Thursday, November 8, at around 9:00 p.m. campesino leader Luis Tarazona Salamanca, responsible for the Community Committee of Miramontes, municipality of Tibú, Norte de Santander, was assassinated.

Tarazona, according to the information provided by the authorities, was in his house in the Miramontes, 115 kilometers from Cúcuta, chatting with friends when motorcycle hit men attacked him and opened fire.

The shots also hit his wife in the thorax, but she has survived her injuries.

Luis Tarazona was an artisanal miner, leader of the Campesino Association of Catatumbo (Ascamcat) and administrator of a coal mine. In 2018 four members of Ascamcat have been killed. His wife said that Tarazona had not received threats.

The murder, which was condemned by @ONUHumanRights, adds to the 218 homicides of social, communal and peasant leaders and human rights defenders that, according to the Patriotic March, were committed in 2018: four of them were members of @AscamcatOficia.

In the region of Catatumbo, Norte de Santander, the lives of at least ten leaders and defenders of Human Rights are at risk, according to the Peasant Association, who are promoting the defense of the implementation of peace agreements, mainly the National Program for the Replacement of Crops of Illicit Use, PNIS, an activity that has made them the target of threats from illegal armed groups that are the successors of previous paramilitaries.
