For ten years Saúl Rojas González had been president of the Junta de Acción Comunal (Community Action Board) – JAC – in the community of San Juanito in Algeciras, Huila.
Saúl was a well known and respected leader especially because of the work he had done to help families affected by a devastating avalanche in February 2017.
On 26 May, 2020, Saúl was working in his shop when two men drove up on a motorbike. They walked up to the shop and shot him multiple times through the window before leaving without saying a word. Saúl died from his injuries in the ambulance on the way to hospital.
In a statement one of his children said that “Saúl was very serious and concerned for the welfare of others, but he always wanted the best for us; I would like my father to be remembered as a man who gave everything for the good of the community, because despite the fact that on many occasions I told him to retire, he said that he had many things to do.”
