Fabio Andrés Gómez was president of the Junta de Acción Comunal (Community Action Board), in vereda La Cristalina, Argelia, Cauca. He was a farm worker who was involved in many community development projects as well serving as a pastor with an evangelical Christian church in Argelia.
On 19 August, 2020, Fabio was at home in the village of La Angostura when armed men burst into his home and shot him dead. Other members of the JAC have also received threats because of their support for the peace process.
The killing is believed to have been carried out by dissident elements of the FARC. Previously armed men went from house to house in the village and forced people to come to a meeting where they were threatened because of their support for the Asociación Campesina de Trabajadores de Argelia, (Association of Peasant Workers of Argelia), Ascamta.
Fabio’s death brought to 58 the number of community leaders killed in Cauca in the first 8 months of 2020.
