Trans activist Claudia Vera, known for her work in favor of HIV prevention, was murdered on Saturday, 30 March 2019, in a street in the district of Independencia.
The crime occurred on the eve of Trans Visibility Day, which was commemorated on March 31. According to relatives of the victim, the murder took place in front of a Reniec agency in that district, which is why the Police expect to access some video footage to clarify the case.
So far it is known that Vera was arguing with a man when a woman came up and shot her up five times. Claudia’s sister, interviewed by the Agency Present, revealed that one of the shots hit her directly in the head.
The Joint Program The United Nations Conference on HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS) expressed its «dismay» at the assassination of Vera, whom the spokesperson described as an «admirable activist.» «Claudia’s early and tragic death only confirms the enormous vulnerability of trans people and the urgent need for society to take action so that human rights are truly universal and inalienable, «said the agency.
For its part, the National Coordinator of Human Rights asked the state to approve a protocol of protection for people who, even in a situation of vulnerability, work to guarantee respect for those rights.
