On 14th March 2017 the body of human rights defender Hiram Yusset Tejeda Salas was found with signs of torture and wounds in Amatlan de los Reyes in the Veracruz region. On 12th March 2017, Yusset Tejeda was kidnapped by a group of assailants who tortured him to death.
Yusset Tejeda was a graduate of physical education from Golfo University. He also worked in a call centre at Bancomer in Mexico city and during week-ends, he played in a band called «digno desorden» in Córdoba.
In addition to his involvement in socio-cultural activities with the children of his community, Yusset was involved in campaigning against the environmental damage caused by major illegal hydroelectric projects that are being developed in the area.
